US allows TSMC to produce processors for Huawei, but with severe restrictions
Huawei is going through hard times after many US sanctions. Some time ago, a ban came into force on Huawei’s supply of any products in the production of which American technologies are used without an appropriate license. According to the latest information, TSMC, which manufactures Kirin processors, received such a license.
However, not all so simple. Although TSMC received permission from the US government to supply Huawei chips, it is only allowed to sell “mature technology” to the Chinese tech giant. In other words, TSMC will only be able to supply Huawei with processors manufactured using proven technologies. At the moment, the “mature technologies” include chips made using 28-nm or more “thick” technical processes. But not the most recent 16- and 10-nm, not to mention 7- and 5-nm, are considered “advanced” technical processes.
Unfortunately, under such conditions, Huawei will be able to produce only chips for entry-level smartphones at TSMC facilities, since flagship solutions, such as the Kirin 9000, which is expected in Huawei Mate 40 smartphones, are designed for the 5nm process technology.
Thus, albeit with some reservations, TSMC became the third major company, after AMD and Intel, to receive permission to cooperate with Huawei. Unfortunately, such conditions are unlikely to help the Chinese tech giant maintain its market share, because the flagship smartphones, most likely, will have to be abandoned.
