Europe plans its own low-orbit constellation of communications satellites
22.02.2021 [15:16],

Elon Musk recently said that with stable financial flows, Starlink’s business could gain structural independence from SpaceX and go public. But the emerging trend towards ensuring technological sovereignty is forcing Europe to think about creating its own low-orbit constellation of communications satellites. In addition, the European Union is preparing related projects related to unmanned aerial vehicle technologies and space traffic management.

The initiative, called the Action Plan on synergies between civil, defense and space industries, aims to leverage research and innovation across three sectors for other projects and businesses.

Bloomberg reported about this initiative. The European authorities, as specified, are ready to finance several regional programs aimed at the development of satellite communications infrastructure in this region. Ground infrastructure will also benefit from the emergence of high-speed satellite communications, especially in the context of the increased use of self-driving vehicles. Both civilian and military clients will be able to use satellite communications of the new generation.

It is also reported that space traffic management will be introduced to prevent collisions from the proliferation of satellites and space debris, which will provide autonomous EU access to space.

The drone development project will increase the competitiveness of EU industry in this key area through a strong defense sector, while the development for space communications will provide reliable and high-speed communications in Europe based on quantum encryption.

“The idea is for innovation to purposefully have multiple uses through design changes, and to harness the enormous innovation potential of researchers and start-ups,” Margrethe Vestager, European Commissioner for Competition, said in a statement. In turn, the EU Commissioner for Industry Thierry Breton (Thierry Breton) said that the projects will help the European bloc get on its feet, and not rely on other countries. “It will also reduce our dependence on critical technologies and increase the industrial leadership we need to recover from the crisis (coronavirus pandemic),” he stressed.

What will be the budget of the project, while it is yet to be assessed. There is also no clear schedule for financing such developments. The European authorities hope that this infrastructure project will give an impetus to the development of the regional aerospace industry in general.
