Corellium Released Fully Functional Mac Linux Build Based on M1 Chipset
Corellium, an ARM virtualization company, yesterday announced the successful launch of Ubuntu on a Mac mini with an Apple M1 processor. Already today, Corellium was able to achieve full functionality of Ubuntu on ARM-Mac.
Chris Wade, Chief Technology Officer of Corellium, said that a full version of Ubuntu was used to run on a computer with an M1 chip, originally intended for an ARM-based Raspberry Pi. The operating system is currently fully functional and supports USB, I2C and DART. To install it, you only need a USB drive with a capacity of at least 16 GB, to which you need to write an Ubuntu image, guided by the instructions from the Corellium website.
Unfortunately, the build currently has one notable limitation. While the operating system is capable of fully utilizing the M1’s CPU, it does not support the on-chip GPU, so graphics are currently in software rendering mode, which means lower graphics performance than macOS.
Corellium notes that users can boot Linux on Apple Silicon devices using pongoOS, which is a preboot runtime based on the checkra1n jailbreak exploit used by hackers since 2021.
