It is reported that in Germany, a number of institutes have begun work on a national project to create a quantum processor based on superconducting qubits. This is the GeQCoS project, which stands for “German quantum computer based on superconducting qubits”. The GeQCoS project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in the amount of 14.5 million euros, of which more than 3 million euros will be allocated to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

Karlsruhe Institute plays an important role in the project. Researchers at KIT will be looking for the best materials for superconducting qubits. In particular, the press release says: “The main components of a quantum computer, quantum bits or qubits, will be realized by means of zero resistance currents in superconducting circuits. These currents are relatively stable to external disturbances and can maintain quantum states during operation “.

The use of new materials for making qubits is expected to result in better reproducibility and higher quality of qubits, including better connectivity of many qubits and an increase in the number of qubits in processors. Errors associated with the use of superconducting qubits complicate quantum calculations – they reduce the accuracy of calculations, so German scientists set themselves the main goal of creating quantum architectures resistant to interference.

According to experts, today quantum computers are already capable of solving small specific tasks and performing basic operations. In the long term, work is aimed at developing a so-called universal quantum computer that computes important tasks exponentially faster than a classical computer. An architecture suitable for calculating practical tasks requires significant improvements in both hardware and software.

To achieve this goal, the project will develop scalable manufacturing processes and optimized chip packages. Eventually, a prototype quantum processor will be installed at the Walter Meissner Institute of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. The technologies developed are expected to lead not only to new scientific discoveries – close relationships with companies will strengthen the quantum ecosystem in Germany and Europe. Scientists promise that they will do everything possible to create a prototype and provide access to it at the software and hardware level as early as possible.
