The NASA SLS superheavy rocket engine will be retested on February 25

In January, NASA conducted a critical fire test of the main stage engines of its Space Launch System (SLS) super-heavy rocket, but it was interrupted too early due to overstated safety parameters. NASA and Boeing are now ready to retest the SLS, currently scheduled for February 25.

The Engine Critical Test is the last part of an eight-step test that continues over the course of a year. Its job is to make sure the massive rocket will perform as expected when launched, which will send the unmanned mission Artemis 1 around the moon. During the first attempt, which took place on January 17, the engines were stopped at about 67 seconds, and should have worked for 8 minutes – this is how much time they will work during start.

SLS Program Manager at NASA Space Flight Center. Marshall Center (MSFC) in Alabama, John Honeycutt noted at a virtual press conference on February 19 that the upcoming tests are an opportunity to learn as much as possible about the rocket before the actual flight.

The second attempt to pass all tests of the main stage of the SLS will begin on February 25 at the John Stennis Space Center (Mississippi) at 15:00 Moscow time. The fire tests themselves are scheduled for February 26, 2:00 Moscow time. Management, however, said they could start about an hour earlier if everything goes smoothly.

Although the specialists aim at 8 minutes of engine operation, in reality the fire tests can be shorter: it is enough that they last a little more than four minutes to get all the data the team needs to achieve the remaining goals of the vehicle verification program. The test is very stressful, and the team will interrupt it if the fire provides enough data and at the same time begins to threaten the most basic stage.

The state of Mississippi and most of the southern United States are now summing up the results after the abnormal winter cold, which led, among other things, to power outages for millions of subscribers – now the weather is normalizing, so the tests should not be in danger.

NASA faces over budget and behind schedule in SLS program. If the current phase of testing had been skipped, the agency might have been able to meet its planned schedule with a rocket launch in mid-2021. But the experts decided to play it safe, conduct all important tests and firing tests at the Stennis Space Center and launch in mid-2021. But last year, quarantine measures against COVID-19 also affected the area, which slowed down work. And at the end of 2021, hurricane season hit the Mississippi coast: six different tropical storms interfered with the work on the site. After several delays, key fire tests took place on January 17, and now NASA has decided to repeat them.

If tests are successful next week, Stennis Center personnel will have 30 days to prepare the Space Launch System’s main stage for barge transportation to the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. The rest of the components of the Artemis-1 mission are already at KSC.

The launch of an unmanned mission to the Moon itself may occur in October of this year. However, at present NASA considers this period unlikely – too many factors should work out well.
