Avito discovered a vulnerability in an ad service that allows fraudsters to steal money posing as sellers. The service identified the attackers as account owners due to phone number spoofing, after which it provided them with full access to the account. Because of this, one of the users lost 119 thousand rubles.

Seller used Avito delivery to sell a set of color grading panels. The service partner was Boxberry, which completed the courier order. After the delivery notification, the user tried to log into their account to check the money in the account, but could not do this. After restoring access, he noticed that the account data was changed, but there was no money in the account.

The reason for the hack was a too simple identification system. It turned out that the attacker gained access to the account through Avito support by calling from a third-party number with a fake ID that repeated the digits of the original owner. After identifying him as the owner, the support employee agreed to change the email address. The victim suggested that the fraudster learned the number from the Boxberry invoice where it was printed.

In a conversation with Kommersant, Avito representatives confirmed that the scammers could impersonate the account owner by changing the phone number. The company also said that it has already fixed the problem – now the service requests additional data. Which ones, it is not specified.

Ekaterina Konovalova, head of the Letters and Parcels department at Boxberry, noted that in the near future this vulnerability will also be eliminated – only the invoice number will be indicated in the papers. She admitted that a number of company employees have access to the data, but they sign a non-disclosure commitment.

Mikhail Kondrashin, CTO of Trend Micro in Russia and the CIS, stressed that the signing of the obligations does not exclude the possible collusion of employees who had access to the invoice with attackers. Kaspersky Lab expert Sergey Golovanov said that the leak could have occurred at any stage of the work, including the seller, the sales platform, the delivery service and the buyer.
