Intel did not make it to the top five chip manufacturers
17.02.2021 [13:41],
Alexey Razin

The largest manufacturers of semiconductor components have long been known and do not change from year to year – these are TSMC, Intel and Samsung Electronics. It is characteristic that in various ratings they can change places, sometimes quite unexpectedly. For example, Intel did not enter the top five leaders in terms of the number of processed silicon wafers at the end of December last year.

IC Insights agency shares December statistics. The alignment of forces by the criterion of the number of silicon wafers processed monthly in an equivalent standard size of 200 mm did not change over the year, but signs of an increase in the consolidation of the industry were observed. In any case, the top five companies have increased their share from 53% to 54% compared to December 2021.

Samsung Electronics increased monthly output of silicon wafers with semiconductor components to 3.06 million pieces by December last year. This is 4% more than a year earlier. The Korean giant occupies 14.7% of the world market, although the share of contract manufacturing in this volume is not so large – Samsung consumes most of its products on its own to produce some more complex products.

TSMC, together with its subsidiaries, increased monthly production to 2.72 million 200 mm silicon wafers last December. This is 9% more than a year earlier, but the share of the Taiwanese manufacturer in the global market does not exceed 13.1%. By the way, if we consider the contract manufacturing market, then TSMC is the undisputed leader on it with a share of more than 50%.

Memory chip manufacturers round out the top five: Micron Technology with 9.3% of the market, SK Hynix with 9% of the market and Kioxia in alliance with WDC claim 7.7% of the market. By the way, it was the Japanese enterprises Kioxia that became the leaders in terms of the growth of silicon wafer processing volumes (+ 14%) among the five largest companies in the sector. Intel with its 884 thousand monthly processed silicon wafers can only claim the sixth place, almost twice behind Kioxia in terms of production.

TSMC processes three times more silicon wafers than Intel. But even with such a proportion, Intel remains a large customer of a contract manufacturer, which for several years has received up to a quarter of the proceeds from the sale of those components that it does not produce on its own. Of course, Intel would not transfer the entire range of its products to the TSMC conveyor, but even small changes in this area for the Taiwanese contractor will become a serious burden, given the already high demand for its services.
