First electric tanker powered by lithium-ion batteries will be launched in Japan next year

New ship, powered only by lithium-ion batteries, will soon sail the waters off the coastline of Japan. The 60m E5 will be the first all-electric vessel of its type when launched in Tokyo Bay next year, according to shipbuilders.

The E5 is the newest vessel in a small but growing fleet of ships using batteries as a power source for propulsion and on-board systems. As the global shipping industry works to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and eliminate air pollution, shipbuilders and carriers are increasingly moving towards the electrification of bulk carriers, tankers, container ships and other cargo ships.

The electric vessel E5, which will ironically carry diesel to fuel other cargo ships in the bay, will be owned by Tokyo-based Asahi Tanker. The battery system will receive a total capacity of 3.5 MWh – that’s about 40 Tesla Model S battery packs. According to Sean Puchalski of Corvus Energy, which supplies the batteries, this is enough power to keep the ship moving for “many hours” before it needs to be connected to an onshore charging station.

Corvus Energy, with offices in Norway and Canada, has installed batteries on nearly 400 ships, about a quarter of which are fully electric. Most of these are passenger and car ferries operating in the Norwegian fjords, where ship operators face tough restrictions on CO2 emissions and toxic air pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and nitric oxide.

The Japanese tanker is Corvus’ first all-electric coastal freighter. The company hopes the E5 will be the first of hundreds of similar. “We see the project as a springboard for entering the global coastal shipping market,” said Puhalski. “There are many other types of coastal freighters that are similar in size and power consumption.”.

The number of battery powered ships has grown worldwide from virtually zero ten years ago to hundreds today. The battery of the E5 tanker is perhaps the most capacious one today, although several larger projects are under development. For example, the 80-meter Yara Birkeland container ship will use a 9 MWh system for its entire propulsion system when launched in 2021. Corvus also supplies batteries with a total capacity of 10 MWh for the AIDAPerla cruise ship with a capacity of 3330 passengers.

The development of marine electric transport is facilitated by two main factors. First, lithium-ion batteries have become significantly cheaper due to the boom of electric vehicles on land. In 2021, the average price for battery packs was about $ 140 per kilowatt-hour against $ 670 in 2021. Prices are expected to drop to around $ 100 per kilowatt hour by 2023.

Second, shipping companies now have to fight their carbon footprint. Cargo ships account for nearly 3% of annual greenhouse gas emissions, according to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the UN body that regulates the industry. In 20221, IMO agreed to reduce ship emissions by 50% from 2021 levels by 2050.
