Chinese enthusiast has conducted a comparative gaming test of a qualification sample of the Intel Core i9-11900K (Rocket Lake-S) processor, the recently noted engineering sample of the AMD Ryzen 7 5700G Cezanne hybrid, as well as the Ryzen 7 5800X. Despite the fact that the blue chip turned out to be faster than AMD solutions in synthetic tests, in games it disappointed with its performance.

Intel Core i9-11900K model will be the future flagship of the desktop series of Rocket Lake processors. The processor has eight physical cores, capable of handling 16 virtual threads, and also has 16 MB of shared L3 cache and 4 MB of L2 cache (512 KB per core). Processor base frequency is 3.5 GHz. In Turbo mode, it can be bumped up to 5.2 GHz per core or up to 4.8 GHz for all cores. The chip has support for Thermal Velocity Boost technology, which adds another 100 MHz to the maximum frequency. Thus, one processor core is capable of automatically overclocking up to 5.3 GHz. Traditionally, for Intel flagships, the nominal TDP value of the processor is 125 W (PL1), and the maximum TDP level is limited to 250 W (PL2).

According to a Chinese test enthusiast, the Intel Core i9-11900K qualifier ran on a Z590 motherboard equipped with the final BIOS that will be available at the time of sale. The new firmware improves the performance of the Rocket Lake-S qualifier, but in some cases the chip still showed instability, especially when trying to manually overclock. This was expressed in crashes and “blue screens of death” during the tests. It is highly likely that motherboard manufacturers will release more stable firmware by the time the 11th Gen Intel Core chips are on sale.

As for the early engineering sample AMD Ryzen 7 5700G, which we talked about yesterday, it was launched on the Gigabyte X570I Aorus Pro board. The Ryzen 7 5700G desktop hybrid uses 8 physical cores and 16 virtual threads, and their clock speed reaches 4.45 GHz. Since this is an engineering sample, several of its features including the integrated Radeon Vega graphics have been disabled via the BIOS. AMD Ryzen 7 5700G and Ryzen 7 5800X used PBO mode in benchmarks. And the Intel chip worked with manual overclocking to 5.2 GHz across all cores.

In synthetic tests, with the exception of single-threaded Cinebench R15, the Intel Core i9-11900K sample was faster than both AMD processors.

In gaming tests, the picture was not so unambiguous. Despite the huge advantage in operating frequency as a result of manual overclocking to 5.2 GHz across all cores, the Intel Core i9-11900K barely caught up with the same eight-core Ryzen 7 5800X, and even lost to it in some games. Screenshots of game tests, as well as a graph showing the average performance level of three processors, can be found below.

Again, it should be recalled that the results for the Intel Core i9-11900K and AMD Ryzen 7 5700G are based on engineering samples. The final performance level of both processors is very likely to be higher. But hardly enough for the Intel Core i9-11900K to be able to compete with the flagship solution Ryzen 9 5950X in the same games, especially if AMD thinks about reducing prices for its desktop solutions based on Zen 3 by mid-2021.
