For an in-depth study of weather phenomena on Earth, meteorologists need probes in the mesosphere at a distance of 50 to 80 km above the planet’s surface. In this zone, the air is so thin that balloons and airplanes no longer have support for flight, and for spacecraft flights, the air density is still high. The way out can be found in the lightest hovering devices, for the movement of which there is enough laser pulses or reflected sunlight.

A group of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania discovered that laser light can levitate very thin discs under conditions that mimic the mesosphere. The research is featured in an article published in Science Advances. The work was aimed at inventing a method for flying at very high altitudes and studying how well the proposed method manifests itself in practice.

Scientists have created very thin discs made of mylar (analogue of lavsan) with a diameter of 6 mm. The bottom of the discs was covered with carbon nanotubes. The tests were carried out in a chamber with a pressure of 30 Pa, as in the mesosphere. It turned out that when irradiated with laser pulses or reflected light, the disks rose to a considerable height. Moreover, the experimenters were able to control the direction of movement of the disks by adjusting the intensity of the “bombardment” with light pulses.

Scientists explained the resulting phenomenon by the uneven heating of nanotubes from the bottom of the disks. The heat in the tube layer was distributed in such a way that the movement of air molecules at the bottom of the disks occurred at a higher speed than at the top. The disks were pushed up not by light, but by the energy transmitted by pulses of light.

Researchers acknowledge that their work is preliminary. It remains unknown whether the proposed approach will work for disks dropped into the mesosphere. In addition, additional work is required to understand the limits of scaling the system to disks of the desired size.
