Samsung Heavy to Demonstrate Large Ship Remote Control System
10.02.2021 [12:22],
Gennady Detinich

Samsung Heavy Industries said today it will demonstrate remote autonomous navigation for a large ship this August. Earlier, the company showed the operation of an autonomous remote control system for a ship with a displacement of 300 tons. In a new experiment, a remote operator will control a vessel with a displacement of 9,200 tons. This roughly corresponds to a modern destroyer with a length of 150 meters.

In October 2021, Samsung Heavy announced that it successfully operated its 300-ton autonomous vessel at sea off Geoje Island, 398 km south of Seoul. The operator of the vessel was at the company’s research center in Daejeon, 250 km from the sea. The new demonstration, if successful, will cement Samsung’s title as the world’s first shipbuilder to put into practice a remote autonomous navigation system for large ships.

Mokpo National Maritime University will attend the upcoming August demonstration of Samsung’s Remote Autonomous Marine Navigation System as observers. Maritime professionals will evaluate Samsung Heavy’s remote navigation capabilities, which will allow the company to commercialize the development as early as next year. The time is not too far away when for seafarers of long-distance voyages flights will be shortened to the way from home to work and back.
