TSMC to issue $ 9 billion in bonds to fund construction and research
10.02.2021 [07:32],
Alexey Razin

Taiwan-based TSMC has already announced at its quarterly reporting conference in January that it will increase its capital expenditures by 60% over last year, with a combined spending of $ 25 billion to $ 28 billion on plant construction and new technologies. She will receive part of this amount on the debt market – almost $ 9 billion.

As noted by Reuters, the company’s board of directors approved a bond issue in the domestic Taiwan market for a total of about $ 4.29 billion. Additional USD bonds worth $ 4.5 billion will be issued on the external market. The purpose of these borrowings, as the official documents state, is to expand production and implement measures related to the prevention of environmental pollution.

Earlier it was reported that TSMC could spend up to $ 15 billion on the development of 3-nm technology this year. A new plant is being built in southern Taiwan for the production of relevant products, with the onset of the holiday holidays, the company did not even want to stop construction, for which the workers were offered triple pay. The new enterprise should start issuing products in the second half of next year. According to some reports, TSMC also wants to increase the output of 5nm products by 70% by the end of this year, so the company will really need money to expand its production. At the same time, it is necessary to solve something with the construction of an enterprise in the American state of Arizona, which should begin production in 2024.

In Japan, as noted by Reuters, TSMC should build a new research center worth $ 178 million, where, together with Japanese partners, it will develop technologies for three-dimensional layout of microcircuits. The TSMC Board of Directors approved the allocation of $ 11.79 billion for the construction of enterprises, their technological equipment and re-equipment, as well as for research work in the second quarter of this year.
