Qualcomm unveils next-generation Snapdragon X65 5G modem with speeds up to 10 Gbps
Qualcomm has announced the latest 5G modem – Snapdragon X65. It will be the successor to last year’s Snapdragon X60, which has just started appearing in real devices as part of the Snapdragon 888 SoC. Qualcomm promises that the new modem will be much faster and will provide speeds up to 10 Gbps in both offline and offline 5G networks (subject to carrier support).
It will take some noticeable time before the X65 modem appears in the end devices. Based on past practice, it likely won’t show up until the next flagship Snapdragon SoC launches – presumably this chip will be announced in December with devices on it next year. However, there is a possibility of seeing the X65 earlier in the new iPhones.
The maximum download speed for the new product has reached the psychological mark of 10 Gbps against 7.5 Gbps for last year’s model. This is the most striking characteristic, even if such a declared speed is largely meaningless, since almost no 5G network can yet provide such bandwidth. But this means that the new generation of cellular communications has room for development.
Future 5G enhancements are embedded in other X65 innovations: first of all, the modem was the first to be compliant with the recently approved 3GPP Release 16 specifications. In fact, we are talking about the next step in the development of 5G, which aims to improve metrics such as mass MIMO connectivity, power consumption, positioning over 5G and more. Release 16 is also intended to help roll out 5G beyond the consumer sector to industry and enterprises with better support for unlicensed spectrum and non-public networks.
In this regard, Qualcomm stated that the architecture of the X65 modem system is subject to updates, allowing the company to add new capabilities over time as 3GPP Release 16 rolls out. Software updates of this kind will allow future smartphones and other devices to stay relevant for longer.
Along with the new modem system, Qualcomm also introduced the Qualcomm QTM 545 mmWave antenna – this is the 4th generation of the company’s millimeter-wave antennas. Its size remains the same, but the power has increased, and support for the full range of global frequencies mmWave has been added.
Finally, Qualcomm unveils AI-based antenna tuning technology, which according to the manufacturer can significantly improve performance thanks to machine learning technologies. For example, Qualcomm said the new system is 30% more accurate in how a person holds the phone in their hand, which allows for better connectivity; the technology also increases battery life due to more efficient connection work.
Snapdragon X65 is expected to hit stores in late 2021.
