Apple will tighten privacy rules this spring – user permission will be required to track user data
28.01.2021 [09:38],
Arthur Khamzin

Apple announced the date of the introduction of new privacy rules App Tracking Transparency, which are intended to give the user more control over the tracking of their activity. The company said they will go into effect in Spring 2021 when the next iOS beta comes out. Writes about it MacRumors.

Bloomberg

According to the new rules, applications will now have to obtain user permission to track any data. This is especially true for the unique identifier for advertisers (IDFA) and browser activity. This data is used for advertising purposes and to evaluate the effectiveness of advertising campaigns.

Permission will be requested when launching applications – users will be prompted to grant the required access or refuse. In case of failure, the OS will block the program’s access to information. If the app developers decide to workaround this information, Apple may remove the product from the App Store.

“We see this as a simple matter of protecting our users. They need to know when their data is collected and shared with other apps and sites. They must have a choice – to agree with it or not, “- said in a statement Apple.

Previously, it was assumed that the user automatically consents to the processing of such information. Device owners could also block access to IDFA, but for this it was necessary to find the necessary settings in the smartphone. Therefore, for example, only 30% of iPhone users in the US changed their privacy settings.

Several ad networks criticized Apple’s decision. These include Facebook, which claims that the platform-holder’s decision will hit small businesses. To combat the manufacturer’s decision, the social network launched a full-scale campaign – advertised in major newspapers and launched a web page calling to speak out against App Tracking Transparency.

Some supported Apple’s decision. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a not-for-profit organization, considered Facebook’s claim “ludicrous”, while Firefox developers Mozilla supported the platform-holder, calling the decision “a huge victory for consumers.”.
