The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) initiates a five-year program to develop structures and materials for the construction of large structures in orbit and on the Moon. Large structures cannot be delivered from Earth to orbit and beyond. “Construction of the century” can only be started on the spot, which requires both new materials and remote control systems for construction robots.

The new program received the code NOM4D (pronounced as NOMAD or, in Russian, nomad). Decodes the acronym as “New Orbital and Lunar Manufacturing, Materials and Mass Design”.

“The vision for NOM4D is to develop the basic materials, processes and structures required to implement large, accurate and reliable DOD systems in space,” said Bill Carter, Program Manager at DARPA’s Defense Research Administration. “We will explore the unique benefits of in-orbit manufacturing using advanced materials delivered from Earth.”.

Also, the new program provides for the use of local materials, in particular from the lunar surface. The program is divided into three 18-month stages. At the first stage, projects of efficient space structures and selection of materials will be developed using a typical 1 MW solar panel. In the second phase, the assembly technologies will be improved to meet the requirements for the collection of a 100 m diameter RF reflector sample. The third phase is expected to achieve a significant leap in accuracy, which will allow the creation of infrared reflective structures suitable for use in a segmented long-wave infrared telescope.

In each case, it is planned to manufacture large-scale samples on Earth for the development of metrics and verification of concepts.
