WhatsApp remains the most popular messenger among Russians, despite the new service policy
26.01.2021 [14:03],
Vladimir Fetisov

WhatsApp, owned by Facebook, continues to be the most popular messenger among Russians in 2021 – early 2021. This is evidenced by the data of mobile operators. It is noteworthy that the popularity of WhatsApp has not been shaken by the new privacy policy of the service, in accordance with which the IM client will share user data with Facebook.

As a reminder, earlier this month, WhatsApp announced changes to its user agreement and privacy policy. The changes assume that the service will transfer user data to the parent company Facebook. This move was criticized by users, after which the WhatsApp audience began to decline, and the number of users from competitors such as Telegram and Signal, on the contrary, increased. As a result, WhatsApp postponed the application of the new policy until mid-May this year.

According to Megafon, the companies in the network are leading in terms of the amount of traffic used among messengers WhatsApp (58%), Telegram (32%), Viber (2%), Facebook (1.7%), IMO (1.7%). When it comes to calls via instant messengers, the leaders here are WhatsApp (73%), Viber (7.2%), Facebook (4.4%), IMO (4.2%), FaceTime (3%). WhatsApp (52%), Telegram (44%), IMO (0.7%), Facebook (0.7%), WeChat (0.5%) are the leaders in terms of using chats and sending content.

The most popular messenger among Beeline subscribers in terms of traffic volume in 2021 was WhatsApp, followed by Telegram, Viber, Skype and FaceTime. Beeline noted that in 2021 the number of the company’s subscribers using Telegram has increased sevenfold. By the number of users, the rating of instant messengers was topped by WhatsApp for the whole last year. It was followed by Viber, Telegram, Skype and FaceTime.

According to MTS, the rating of messengers by traffic volume is as follows: WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber, Facebook Messenger, Skype. MTS believes that the volume of Telegram traffic in 2021 will continue to grow at a faster pace than WhatsApp. This forecast is based on the fact that Telegram attracts new users with content and replaces media sites, news portals, aggregators of discount programs, etc.

Among Tele2 subscribers, the most popular messengers were WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber, Skype, Facebook Messenger. The company noted that there was no sharp growth in the user audience of the Telegram messenger in January of this year among Tele2 subscribers.
