As we reported earlier, the superconducting engine passed the final bench tests last summer, and at the end of the year entered the Siberian Scientific Research Institute of Aviation named after S.BUT. Chaplygin and was installed on a laboratory aircraft based on the Yak-40. At the same time, the electric motor was tested on a frame with a screw in a number of modes. Yesterday, the stage of ground development began, during which, in particular, the laboratory aircraft checked the operation of the systems and tested the joint operating modes of the superconducting electric motor with a tail turboshaft gas turbine engine and generator.

Electricity to the engine in the bow will be generated by both a generator coupled with a gas turbine engine and a lithium battery pack. Such a hybrid scheme, according to the developers, will save up to 70% of fuel, which makes the hybrid aircraft propulsion system environmentally friendly and low-noise. And since the most stringent requirements for aviation technology, the proven technology can easily find application in other industries when creating new technology. This is a huge reserve for the future.

Hybrid power plant project kicked off in 2021. The project is based on an innovative electric aircraft engine based on high-temperature superconductors (HTSC), with a power of 500 kW, created by SuperOx under a contract with the Advanced Research Fund (code “Kontur”). Before being installed on an aircraft, it underwent a set of tests on ground benches at CIAM. The electric generator for the hybrid system was also developed at CIAM jointly with the Ufa State Aviation Technical University (USATU). The generator has an output power of 400 kW, weighs 100 kg and has passed both bench tests and tests as part of a turbine generator (based on a serial turboshaft aircraft engine).

In 20221, it was decided to use the Yak-40 aircraft for testing the hybrid power plant. For this, the aircraft laboratory based on the Yak-40 was significantly modified. In the tail section of the fuselage, instead of the standard AI-25 engine, a turboshaft gas turbine engine with an electric generator was installed. To equip the Yak-40 with an electric motor, it was remotorized (two of the three main engines were replaced with modern engines with higher thrust), the airframe design was improved, parts and assembly units were produced, with the help of which the demonstrator was installed on board the flying laboratory.

After a series of ground tests of the systems and hybrid propulsion system, flight tests are planned later this year, with the project expected to go into service next year.
