China is about to catch up with IBM, Intel and Google in the field of quantum computers

Japanese media reported, citing Chinese counterparts, that China’s Origin Quantum raised funds in the first round of Series A funding to catch up with leading quantum computing players such as IBM, Intel and Google.

Origin Quantum was established in 20021 as a spin-off of the Key Laboratory of Quantum Information of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The company received its first funding from a large Asian investment fund CASSTAR. Investments in Series A of the company were provided by the China Internet Investment Fund, China Reform Fund, CCB International and a number of other investors, close to the Chinese authorities. The collected money will go to the development and production of quantum computers and quantum chips, as well as to research the main quantum technologies associated with computing – measuring the state of qubits and controlling the qubits.

Interestingly, the Chinese are developing quantum computers based on both superconducting qubits and silicon (spin) qubits. In the first case, they follow the path of IBM and allegedly lag behind it by only three years, and in the second case, they follow the path of Intel and are only two years behind it.

R&D at Origin Quantum is led by two leading Chinese quantum computing scientists: Guo Guangcan and Guo Guoping. The core of the research team is composed of experts with PhD degrees in Computer Science and Physics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Research staff is recruited mainly from young specialists of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Origin Quantum is headquartered in Hefei with branches in Chengdu and Shenzhen.

Last year, Origin Quantum unveiled the first superconducting quantum computer called the Wu Yuan, powered by a KF C6-130 6-qubit superconducting quantum processor that it developed independently. This system is comparable to the IBM Q computer, announced in 20021 (note that IBM then prepared a 17-qubit system, but there were fewer actually coupled qubits there).

Origin Quantum is currently completing debugging of a 24-qubit computer based on superconducting qubits and promises to create a 64-qubit computer by the end of the year or early next year.

In just three years, Origin Quantum has announced more than 10 different quantum chips, including the first-generation two-qubit quantum processor dubbed the XW B2-100 and the aforementioned KF C6-130. More than 100 companies have already subscribed to the cloud-based quantum computing service Origin Quantum, which was also created there from scratch with all the necessary software and algorithmic content. The company also entered into a number of deals for the sale of its quantum computers and related software and hardware.
