World’s first flying race car with a top speed of 120 km / h unveiled – this octocopter speeder is set to take part in a new event later this year. The machine, created by Alauda Aeronautics, was named Airspeeder Mk3. It can take off and land vertically, but will initially be controlled by a pilot from the outside.

The first unmanned test races with this flying car will take place this year, and in 2022 there will be a competition with the participation of pilots. The aircraft has been in development for over three years as part of an effort to create a sport that will accelerate the green air transport revolution.

The company is based in the south of Australia and is going to prepare 10 identical cars for the first competition this year. Airspeeder is designed and manufactured by a team of leading aerospace and automotive companies including McLaren, Babcock Aviation, Boeing, Jaguar Land Rover, Rolls-Royce and Brabham.

“These remotely piloted races will introduce the world for the first time flying car competitions at close range at speeds in excess of 120 km / h,” the company explained. Final tests of this aerobolic will take place before the start of the competition season in Australia. “These momentous moments will go down in history as they showcase the full-scale vision of electric flying car racing for the first time.”.

The Airspeeder Mk3 is called the “giant technical leap” because the machine includes a set of technologies that were not previously found in electric aircraft. This includes collision avoidance systems using lidar and radar, frame and fuselage made of carbon fiber for high strength indicators with minimal weight. Compared to the Mk2 prototype presented earlier this year, the power of the new version has increased by 95% with a weight increase of 50%. The machine uses 96 kW motors and weighs only 100 kg without a pilot. The aircraft uses 8 propellers, which, according to the developers, gives pilots advantages in terms of agility and stability during races, allowing them to make the same sharp turns as Formula 1 cars, but with the additional ability to move vertically. 8 screws also increase reliability – if one of them fails, the car can land safely.

The company does not stop development and is already working on the creation of the Airspeeder Mk4 – most likely, it will be on the Mk4, if everything goes according to plan, air races will take place in 2022.
