Gaming consoles provided AMD with just 15% of net revenue last year
AMD’s 10-K Annual Report contains a lot of interesting information about the company’s cost and income structure. For one of the directions of AMD activity, the past year was a turning point – the generation of game consoles, which the company supplies with specialized processors, has changed. The year was not very fruitful: consoles brought AMD no more than 15% of net revenue.

It’s hard enough to believe in this, recalling the series of news about the rush demand for new game consoles from Sony and Microsoft, problems with buying them in retail and TSMC’s desire to help saturate the market in every possible way. Revelations of AMD representatives at the last quarterly conference, however, do not allow for a mistake. According to the company’s CFO Devinder Kumar, server and semi-custom components in 2021 brought in $ 3.33 billion or 34% of total net revenue. And the revenue from the sale of the server components themselves reached 19% of the total level.

If we subtract 19% from this share attributable to server components, then we just get 15% that could go to game consoles. This figure is partly confirmed by AMD’s statement that none of the company’s customers in 2021 formed ten or more percent of total revenue. This means that Sony and Microsoft, which have been the largest customers of Sony and Microsoft for several years at the end of 2021, could not step over the 10% barrier in terms of revenue share. Even if we divide the received 15% approximately equally, the share of each of the two companies will have 7.5%.
In the old days, AMD’s revenue could significantly depend on several large customers. This was especially noticeable until 20021, when Ryzen processors entered the market, since before their debut, it was the gaming consoles that kept AMD afloat. In 20221, one of AMD’s large customers generated 19% of revenue, and the second – 11%. In 2021 and 2021, the number of large clients with a revenue share of more than 10% reached three, with the largest of them forming 23% of AMD’s total net revenue.
AMD’s revenue grew at an outstripping pace in many areas in the past year, and a generational change was under way in the gaming console market. The intensification of preparations for the announcement of new consoles closer to the second half of the year could not reverse the general trend, as a result, the company’s net revenue was only 15% determined by the gaming consoles segment. Moderate growth in the rate of return at the end of the year is also to some extent due to the low specific profitability of components for game consoles at the first stage of the life cycle. Consoles should bring AMD more in the future.
