NASA astronauts went into outer space for the second time in a week and completed a three-year upgrade of the ISS batteries
Two NASA astronauts completed another spacewalk yesterday, setting up a European science platform and completing a long series of battery replacements outside the International Space Station.

According to NASA, the spacewalk, which began on February 1 at 15:56 Moscow time, became the 234th in a row during the existence of the International Space Station (ISS). The previous 233rd took place just a few days before – January 27. Both of these exits were made by NASA astronauts Victor Glover and Mike Hopkins. As a result, the former now has two spacewalks, and the latter has four.

Astronauts during the last mission, which lasted 5 hours and 20 minutes, had to solve many problems. First of all, they installed an adapter for connecting a new lithium-ion battery on the P-4 segment of the ISS truss, to which a pair of solar panels are attached, thereby completing the modernization of the station’s power supply system, which began back in January 20021. Since then, during 11 spacewalks, a total of 48 obsolete nickel-hydrogen batteries have been dismantled, accumulating and distributing energy from solar panels, and instead of them 24 more powerful lithium-ion batteries have been installed.

Then, on the right side of the station’s farm, a high-resolution camera was replaced to replace the broken one and cables were connected to it. Astronauts also installed new cameras on the US Science Module Destiny and the Japanese Science Module Kibo’s arm. Also, smaller related tasks have been completed. Inside the station, NASA astronauts Kate Rubins and JAXA Soichi Noguchi assisted the mission.

According to NASA, after this spacewalk, the astronauts of the 64th expedition in the near future will make two more spacewalks. In the first, Glover and Rubins will prepare the space station’s power system to install new solar panels, and in the second, Rubins and Noguchi will continue to upgrade components of the ISS. The exact dates have not yet been announced.

By the way, the last spacewalk coincided with the anniversary of the sinking of the Columbia spacecraft STS-107, which occurred on February 1, 2021: the shuttle exploded on its return to Earth, killing all seven astronauts on board. Investigation revealed that during launch, a piece of thermal insulation covering the outer tank hit hard on the carbon fiber panel of the Columbia’s left wing. This damage to the space shuttle’s thermal insulation led to its destruction upon entry into the atmosphere.
