BluShift Aerospace Successfully Test Launches First Commercial Biofuel Rocket
January 31, 2021 bluShift Aerospace Stardust 1 rocket.0 embarked on its first low-altitude test flight from Limestone, Maine. Small Stardust 1.0 declared as the world’s first commercial launch vehicle powered by biofuel.
The rocket never made it to space (and never even crossed a mile), but the launch was a milestone for a company looking to send microsatellite missions. “Everything went perfectly,” Sasha Deri, executive director of bluShift, told reporters after launching from a snow-covered runway. – The rocket landed exactly where we hoped and where we planned. It couldn’t have been better “.
Stardust 1.0 is a very small bio-based solid fuel rocket. It will serve as a test projectile for the development of future bluShift rockets capable of launching tiny nanosatellites into orbit. Machine height is only 6 meters and payload weight reaches 8 kg.
BluShift Takes Several Tries To Launch Stardust 1.0. Bad weather prevented the start on January 14. Then on Sunday, due to a problem with the pressure in the oxidizer valve, the rocket did not take off, even after the solid fuel was ignited. “It won’t start!”, – could be heard during the bluShift live broadcast. A second attempt after about 90 minutes failed because the rocket igniter did not fire as planned. The company was also hampered by freezing temperatures and problems with the Network.
But the third time, already in the middle of the day, Stardust 1.0 took off from its platform to an altitude of about 1220 meters, then deployed a parachute to land. According to Mr. Deri, the brake parachute suddenly came off and was found by two little girls and their parents using a snowmobile (they were among the volunteers who volunteered to pick up the rocket after launch). “We are very happy with what happened today,” said the head of the company.

BluShift Aerospace was founded in 2021 and is a team of eight that aims to launch tiny satellites into polar orbits from the coast of Maine. The company is targeting nanosatellite customers who want more flexibility or control over orbits that might not be available when launched via SpaceX or Rocket Lab.
For this task bluShift plans to build two larger suborbital missiles called Stardust 2.0 and Starless Rogue, which will provide up to 6 minutes of zero gravity for payloads at a launch price of about $ 300,000. And already an orbital rocket called Red Dwarf will launch nanosatellites weighing up to 30 kg into orbit at about $ 60,000 per kilogram.
The bluShift Modular Adaptable Rocket Engine for Vehicle Launch (MAREVL) uses a proprietary solid biofuel that the company claims is non-toxic and can be purchased inexpensively from U.S. farms. According to Mr. Deri, nitrous oxide and oxygen are used as oxidants.
On its first launch of Stardust 1.0 posted three payloads: a cubesat built by Falmouth High School students with a GoPro camera, radio transmitter, and sensors on board; a small experiment from a research laboratory in Nashua, New Hampshire; and a cubesat body with Dutch waffle biscuits.
The company hopes to use the launch to attract investors: the company is currently seeking to raise $ 650,000 to fund the development of Stardust 2.0 and future missiles. Members of the core team of the company have already invested in the project $ 500,000 of their own funds and won a NASA grant for $ 125,000, as well as received funds from the Maine Institute of Technology.
“We want to turn into Uber in space, providing full-fledged nanosatellites launch services,” said Sasha Deri before the launch. But so far this is obviously far away.
