The European Union decided to independently produce lithium batteries and allocated 2.9 billion euros for this
My kingdom for a battery – something like this can be imagined a new pan-European project to create a large-scale production base for the production of lithium batteries in the European Union. This is required by a course towards greening the economy, transport and industry, as well as an attempt to eliminate dependence on Chinese battery manufacturers. They plan to allocate huge budget funds for the program and attract even more from companies.
It has been about thirty years since lithium batteries began to conquer the market. The Japanese started on it, then the Koreans, and finally, fifteen years ago, the Chinese took matters into their own hands. And somehow it so happened that China became a leader in the processing of lithium-containing raw materials and the production of lithium batteries. Along the way, it turned out that the programs for greening the economies of developed Western countries in all its manifestations from everyday life to industry and even the army were held hostage by Chinese manufacturers of lithium-containing batteries.
Of course, there are Panasonic, LG and Samsung in stock, but China is increasing battery production faster than its more developed neighbors in the region and is playing an ever-increasing role in the battery market. Therefore, the EU authorities tried to do at least something that can be opposed to this, namely, they initiated a program to increase the production of lithium batteries in Europe.
The European Battery Innovation program reportedly will provide € 2.9 billion in government assistance to build a complete production chain for battery technology, from raw material extraction to battery cell design and production, as well as recycling and disposal.
Within the framework of the program, it is planned to attract funds from companies up to nine billion euros. Twelve of the 27 EU member states have already contributed to the project, the first being Germany and France. Also, 42 companies have already signed up for the program, including Tesla, BMW, Fiat Chrysler, Arkema, Borealis, Enel X, Solvay and Sunlight Systems.
“For these huge innovation challenges for the European economy, the risks may be too great for one Member State or one company to tackle alone,” said European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager. “So it makes sense for European governments to come together to support the industry in developing more innovative and environmentally friendly batteries.”.
While a significant number of European countries already have their own battery programs, the idea behind the European Battery Innovation Project is to offer savings to companies from participating in a large pan-European project by pooling resources. It also required the approval of some special rules of state aid.
