Waymo says its autopilot is better than Tesla. Elon Musk did not agree with this

Alexey Razin

Competition in the segment of transport automation systems is rapidly increasing. Young players are beginning to compete with automakers, and global Internet giants are also involved in the process. Waymo representatives are convinced that the sensors they use are much more accurate than competitors’ developments, and the head of Tesla believes that the software and hardware for the autopilot of his company is still better.

Waymo CEO John Krafcik shared his assessment of the situation in an interview with Manager Magazin. “Tesla is not a competitor for us at all. We release a completely autonomous control system. Tesla is an automaker developing a very good Active Driver Assistance system, ”said Waymo CEO. According to him, the difference between the approaches of the two companies is this: Tesla warns drivers to constantly keep their hands on the steering wheel and control the behavior of the car, and inside the Waymo prototypes, the inscription on the steering wheel says that it should not be touched.

According to John Krafchik, it is a mistake to believe that by developing an active driver assistance system, one day you can turn it into a fully automated control system. In terms of reliability and accuracy, for example, the sensors used by Waymo are orders of magnitude superior to competitors’ products that are now found on the road.

This “stone in Tesla’s garden” is clearly related to the categorical rejection of lidars, which was repeatedly demonstrated by the founder of the company Elon Musk. According to him, the autopilot system may well make do with data obtained from ultrasonic sensors and a set of cameras. Waymo uses optical sensors – the so-called lidars – as an additional channel for obtaining information about the surrounding objects. Affinity with Google allows Waymo to simultaneously rely on accurate digital maps of the area, while Tesla prefers to customize its system so that it can work fully even in areas where the car has never been.

Elon Musk, as noted by Electrek, was laconic in his response comments. He simply stated that he was surprised by the superiority of Tesla’s software and hardware over the corresponding components of the Waymo autopilot. Initially relying on Mobileye components, now taken over by Intel, Elon Musk’s company later used NVIDIA GPUs and mobile processors, but in recent years has been equipping its electric vehicles with in-house developed FSD neural processors, which Samsung makes for it. Tesla software is also improving on its own, using data obtained from all operated electric vehicles of the brand.
