In a year, China will launch its first space observatory to observe the Sun
Since the 1960s, more than 70 satellites have been launched around the world to study solar activity. China is hopelessly behind in this regard, but is in a hurry to make up for the lost. The Chinese will launch their first space observatory for observing the Sun in the first half of next year in order to have time to observe the emergence of a new 11-year cycle and the peak of activity of our star.

The Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory (ASO-S) probe will be lifted 720 km above the Earth. From this point, the Sun will be continuously monitored for at least four years. On board the observatory will be a magnetic detector, solar telescope and X-ray apparatus to track the magnetic fields of the Sun and those phenomena of activity – coronal mass ejections and flares, which are “the key to predicting space weather.”.
The probe is expected to provide early warnings of particle fluxes and radiation approaching Earth in about 40 hours. Taking into account the constant saturation of the near-Earth environment with electromagnetic radiation, this will allow you to prepare for communication and control system failures. For example, a series of solar storms peaking in late October 2021 affected satellite systems and communications, resulting in space shutdowns and blackouts, as well as power outages in Sweden.
The ASO-S mission was first proposed in 2021 and formally approved by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 20021. The probe prototype systems are currently undergoing extensive testing, including environmental and thermal experiments, due to be completed by the end of January.
