NVIDIA partners are preparing to release miner video cards based on Ampere chips
The next round of the cryptocurrency boom made NVIDIA think about the resumption of the release of GPUs focused on mining. At the moment, the decision on their production has not yet been made, but the company’s partners are already preparing to offer specialized products to miners.
At a regular investor event, NVIDIA CFO Colette Kress noted that if demand among miners rises to a “meaningful” level, the company may again start offering specialized GPUs called CMPs (Crypto-mining processor). Similar solutions were common at the peak of the last crypto fever – the manufacturers of graphic cards made on their basis mining video cards without graphic outputs, with a reduced amount of video memory and with a reduced warranty.
However, at the moment NVIDIA denies the need to issue specialized CMPs: the company does not believe that the emerging demand from miners is a pronounced trend. As Colette Kress commented: “We do not know how much of the final demand for the RTX 30 Series comes from cryptocurrency miners.”.
Despite the statements of the NVIDIA management, it is extremely difficult to buy Ampere generation video cards, including due to their good performance indicators when mining cryptocurrencies. For example, with today’s Ethereum rate, one GeForce RTX 3060 Ti video card is capable of bringing its owner about $ 4.3 per day. For this reason, miners engaged in the production of cryptocurrencies on an industrial scale buy such cards in large quantities. According to sources, such customers buy video cards directly from manufacturers in the thousands, and they are ready to give up to $ 700 for the RTX 3060 Ti.
For this reason, manufacturers are expanding the production of mining video cards without waiting for special chips from NVIDIA. For example, MSI recently registered RTX 3060 Ti Miner 8G and RTX 3060 Ti Miner 8G OC models in the register of notifications of the Eurasian Economic Commission, which will be based on conventional GA104-200-A1 chips, which are also used in game cards. Obviously, in this case, MSI is concerned about reducing its own costs, since such cards, without monitor outputs and without a long warranty, are cheaper for the company. The demand for them in any case will be great due to the deficit, which is expected to last at least until the end of the first half of the year. Apparently, deliveries of MSI miner cards will begin in the near future.
Recall that in the years 20021-20221 NVIDIA released specialized mining GPUs of the Pascal generation, P106-100 and P104-100. However, then their wide distribution was prevented by the fact that they came to the market with a delay, when the wave of interest in cryptocurrencies and mining had already begun to subside. Hopefully, this time the company will be quicker.
