Rocket Lab successfully launched microsatellite into orbit in first mission in 2021
After a short delay, today at 10:26 am Moscow time, a two-stage ultra-light Electron launch vehicle with one microsatellite on board was launched from the Rocket Lab cosmodrome in New Zealand. This payload – a communications satellite for the European space company OHB Group – was successfully delivered to its target orbit 70 minutes after launch.
Morning Start Rocket Lab Electron
“Perfect orbit, payload deployed. Hello 2021!”- said the founder and CEO of Rocket Lab, Peter Beck (Peter Beck) via Twitter. Then Rocket Lab published a video of the launch of its 18th successful mission (the number of satellites launched by a private aerospace company into orbit reached 97):
MISSION SUCCESS! Our 18th mission successfully left the crust and @ OHB_SE’s payload has been deployed to a perfect orbit. What a way to start the year! pic.twitter.com / ReoENmMRuk

As reported by Rocket Lab, the OHB Group’s communications microsatellite payload is designed to operate at specific frequencies and maintain future services from orbit. Launch organized by OHB Cosmos, launch contracting division for OHB Group.
So far Electron is a single-use rocket, but that will soon change if everything goes according to plan. Rocket Lab intends to reuse the first stage, which will be picked up in the air by a helicopter when returning to Earth after launch. Electron is too small to make vertical landings like the SpaceX Falcon 9 – the rocket cannot carry enough fuel to keep the amount needed for such a maneuver, the company says.

California-based Rocket Lab makes major strides towards reusable use. The company has flown the first stages of Electron on several recent missions and even carried out a soft landing with a parachute after launching last November. After the November mission, Rocket Lab fished the launch vehicle at sea and brought it ashore for inspection and analysis. However, in the mission that took place today, called “Another Leaves the Earth’s Crust”, no attempts were made to return the accelerator.
Rocket Lab made 8 launches of Electron last year, and is going to do more in 2021. Launch pad # 2 at NASA on Wallops Island, Virginia, is to be used for the first time this year. The company is also building another site near Launch Complex 1 to increase its launch capabilities from the Mahia Peninsula in New Zealand.
