China will store a fifth of soil samples delivered from the moon until better times
twenty.01.2021 [10:36],
Gennady Detinich

Recently, the Chinese National Space Administration (CNSA) issued a decree setting out the procedure for handling new lunar rock samples delivered to Earth by the Chinese Chang’e-5 space probe. Only 80% of the samples will be available for research, while 20% will be stored in storage until new technologies in the study of minerals appear.

During the Chang’e-5 mission, the Chinese probe delivered 1700 grams of “young” rock from the lunar surface and a little under it on December 19 last year. This is China’s first mission to extract samples from space bodies and the only one in the world in the last 44 years to extract lunar soil. In the past, only the USA (382 kg) and the USSR (300 g) delivered samples from the Moon to Earth. China became the third power to repeat this scientific feat.

Six months are given for sorting “Chinese” samples. Thus, this process will end on the twentieth of June. The samples will be divided into four parts: for long-term storage, for long-term backup storage, for study, and for educational and exhibition purposes. In each case, samples can be issued for a period not exceeding 14 months.

It is important to note that China will not hide new samples from the global scientific community. Agency “encourages international collaborative space science research based on lunar prototypes”. During the ceremony, representatives of the scientific community of the EU, Argentina, Pakistan and Namibia were given commemorative plaques.

The next phase of Chang’e’s lunar program aims to land astronauts on the moon by 2030, with possible plans to establish a permanent research station at its south pole. But that is another story.
