FAA allows American Robotics to launch drones without operators

In October, the U.S. Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) took a major step towards full autonomy for drones. Then Skydio received permission for four years to survey any bridge in North Carolina with its drones, provided that they are free of people and technology. Now the regulator has taken the next logical step.

American Robotics

American Robotics said it was the first to be allowed to operate drones without the assistance of a pilot or observer who monitors the launch and operation of a UAV in its immediate vicinity. People are not entirely excluded, though: FAA documents show American Robotics will still need to assign a person for each flight to remotely perform pre-take-off security checks and drone inspections. That is, we are not talking about 100% automation.

But after a formal remote check, the Scout drone will take off from a special container and take over all mission control, and, if necessary, will automatically interrupt the flight. Scout includes an acoustic detection system that allows the drone to dodge other aircraft that can be detected over 3 km away.

In addition, the FAA has approved similar authorization for automatic flights only for a few specific locations in Kansas, Massachusetts and Nevada owned by the company or its customers. Scout technology is not aimed at delivery services, but at companies that wish to conduct automatic aerial inspections of their properties. The FAA hopes that American Robotics’ experience of fully autonomous flying will allow this practice to be expanded on a larger scale in the future, which will increase the efficiency of many sectors of the economy: agriculture, transportation, mining, and so on.

American Robotics had previously received permission to operate drones out of sight, but the pilots still had to be physically at the take-off site, conduct all pre-flight checks live.
