Pat Gelsinger takes over as CEO of Intel
As announced in January, Pat Gelsinger officially took over as Intel CEO on February 15. He replaced Robert Swan, in which Intel lost its position as a leader in semiconductor manufacturing technologies and began to lose ground in the processor market.
Pat Gelsinger becomes the eighth CEO in the history of the famous company. He is a seasoned executive and industry veteran with over four decades of technology experience, with 30 years at Intel, where he began his career.
On assuming the role, Pat Gelsinger said: “As the new CEO, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to raise the image of this great company, which has been critical to every technology area, and to become a leader again in the future. I believe Intel has a treasure trove of technologists, technology, and ultimately being the technology leader who will shape the future is just the company’s DNA. Deep down, I am very happy as a technologist and as a computer enthusiast that I can take the leadership role to move forward, like never before, the passion, history and capabilities of this great company. Our best days are ahead “.
On February 15, Pat (Patrick) Gelsinger officially returned to Intel, the company where he spent the first 30 years of his career. He is not only the CEO, but also a member of the Intel Board of Directors.
Prior to returning to Intel, he served as CEO of VMware. In this role, he turned VMware, whose growth was stalled, into the recognized world leader in the field of cloud infrastructure, enterprise mobility and cybersecurity, and during his leadership was able to almost triple the company’s annual revenue. One of the decisions of the leader, who gave an excellent result, was the cooperation with the leading cloud service Amazon. Gelsinger was also voted America’s best CEO in 2021 according to the annual Glassdoor poll.
Prior to joining VMware in 2021, Gelsinger served as President and COO of EMC’s Information Infrastructure Products, responsible for the design and operation of storage, compute, backup and recovery, RSA security, and more. He was a candidate to replace EMC CEO Joe Tucci, who planned to retire but remained in office.
Pat Gelsinger began his career at Intel in 1979 as an 18-year-old after graduating from technical college and essentially grew up in the company. He was involved in the development of Intel’s most important chip, the 8086, while simultaneously studying at Stanford University. Mr. Gelsinger becomes Intel’s first CTO and senior vice president and CEO of the Digital Enterprise Group. He helped create key industry technologies such as USB and Wi-Fi and was the architect of the original 80486 processor, led 14 microprocessor programs, and played a key role in the development of the Core and Xeon families that have made Intel a leading supplier of CPUs.
Gelsinger received several degrees in electrical engineering: associate at Lincoln Institute of Technology; bachelor’s degree from Santa Clara University; master’s degree from Stanford University. He holds eight patents in IC design, computer architecture and communications, is an IEEE Research Fellow and a member of the US National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee.
Gelsinger has been married for over 30 years – the couple have four children and eight grandchildren. He also writes articles dealing with issues of faith, work and philanthropy.
Intel’s biggest challenge right now is defining Intel’s manufacturing future. When Gelsinger left Intel, the company had the most advanced manufacturing in the world. Now it lags behind TSMC and Samsung, which print crystals for third-party customers. Intel shares dropped 17% last year despite rising shares of most chipmakers.
