European Aviation Safety Agency will introduce eco-rating for flights
Those traveling in Europe by train can read on their travel document how much carbon emissions will be emitted from their trip. According to the German resource Welt am Sonntag, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) plans to introduce similar environmental indicators for the aviation industry. The idea is to provide air passengers with “reliable, comparable and verifiable information” on the basis of which they can choose the most environmentally friendly type of transport to fly.
Aviation adds 3.5% of global warming pollution, according to a recent international study. Two-thirds of this increase is associated with nitrogen oxide (NOx) emitted in flight, trail of condensation, water vapor, sulphate aerosol gases, soot and other aerosol contaminants, and the rest is due to CO2 emissions.
EASA reportedly plans to use high-speed trains as a benchmark in its airplane environmental rating. Differentiation will be made between different classes of aircraft, including regional, large narrow-body airliners, super-heavy models such as the Airbus A380, and even future air taxis. The classification will take into account many different factors, including biofuel use, degree of recycling, waste generated and, in the near future, emissions trading.
Although the COVID-19 crisis has plunged 60-80% in air travel, the industry is expected to return to previous levels by 2025 and continue to grow. The project is part of the EU’s plan to reduce carbon emissions by 2050 under the European „green “agreement” (The European Green Deal).
