Converting waste heat from various sources into electricity remains the cherished goal of many scientific teams around the world. Today, heat is dissipated in the surrounding space, while science has long known ways to generate electricity through chemical reactions with heating. In the study of such reactions, Russian physicists have made great strides, and yesterday they proposed the most inexpensive thermoelectric technology for today.

As reported on the NUST MISIS website, Russian researchers as part of an international research team presented a new cost-effective electrochemical cell based on carbon cloth. This is where the main savings lie. Instead of carbon nanotubes usually used for the manufacture of thermoelectrochemical cells (thermocells), whose price is still very high, Russian scientists proposed using carbon cloth with a modified surface as electrodes. It’s an order of magnitude cheaper than using nanotubes.

Note that in the comments, thermocells are often confused with Peltier thermoelements. Thermocells operate on the Seebeck effect and create an electric current flow at a temperature difference, and thermoelements transfer energy when an electric current passes – create a temperature difference. Thermocells are expected to become the holy grail for picking up temperatures up to 100 ° C. For example, they promise to be promising for converting human body heat into electricity to power wearable electronics.

Russian physicists propose to use as a thermocell elements with carbon cloth electrodes coated with titanium and titanium oxide with a liquid electrolyte based on potassium ferri- and ferrocyanide. In such a cell, under the influence of heat, redox reactions occur, during which a current is generated.

Compared to the classic cell with a salt bridge and a coin cell body, the new development has shown an increase in productivity up to 25.2 mW / m2, as well as an efficiency of 1.37%. It seems a little? But the record efficiency in the field of thermocells is only 3%, and to achieve this result, electrodes made of nanotubes with platinum nanoparticles are needed. Electrodes proposed by Russian physicists with colleagues from Nigeria and a number of Russian universities come out much cheaper. Further work will be aimed at increasing the efficiency and output power of promising thermocells.
