British and Russian physicists have proposed a new way to solve AI problems on optical computers

Researchers from the University of Cambridge and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) have proposed a new way of complex calculations on optical computers. This theoretical work can form the basis of a new approach to using neural networks, solving artificial intelligence problems, and much more, which classical computers can hardly cope with.

The idea is that instead of the traditional use of the addition of light signals (waves) from two or more sources, followed by the interpretation of the result by the state “0” or “1”, the light signals are multiplied. The idea was studied and proposed by Natalia Berloff, professor of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge and the Skoltech Center for Photonics and Quantum Materials (CPQM), and Nikita Stroyev, a Skoltech graduate student.

“It turned out that the most important thing is to find a way to combine these impulses [in fiber],” says Nikita Stroyev. “If you combine them correctly and achieve the desired light intensity, the light will be amplified, affecting the phases of individual pulses and, thereby, prompting a solution for nonlinear problems.”.

Let’s clarify that the proposed solution is not suitable for widespread universal use. We are talking, for example, about the creation of computational optical systems for solving problems by the type of finding optimal solutions (minima), which in many respects resembles the operation of quantum computers in the so-called quantum annealing mode. Only in the case of quantum systems, the problem remains with the destruction of the state of qubits, and we have already learned how to work with light.

However, scientists do not hide that they are only at the beginning of the path. “Before the superiority of optical systems over existing computers in solving complex computational problems is proven, we have to deal with such serious problems as noise reduction, error correction, scalability improvement, finding an objectively optimal solution, etc.d.”, – according to the press release of Skoltech.

“If our approach is adapted for specific types of tasks, it is possible that optical computers can be used to solve real problems that classical computers are no longer able to cope with,” Natalia Berloff said in conclusion.
