US-based chip and wireless maker Qualcomm has teamed up with China Mobile and ZTE to test 5G positioning – an initiative aimed at expanding the mass adoption of next-generation mobile networks in the world’s second largest economy.

The three companies are expected to present the results of their 5G positioning trials this year, as stated in a joint statement. High-precision 5G positioning is key to many applications of the new standard, including public safety and indoor navigation, according to Qualcomm’s website. The technology also offers additional flexibility in deploying and maintaining 5G networks.

“Developing and leveraging positioning capabilities with 5G networks will support industrial applications and expand capabilities in thousands of industries,” said Bai Yanmin, head of the 5G product group at ZTE.
