Valve will pay $ 4 million for patent infringement while developing Steam Controller
SCUF Gaming, a gaming peripheral, wins a lawsuit against Valve for patent infringement while developing a gaming Steam Controller. The court ordered Valve to pay SCUF Gaming and its intellectual property department Ironburg Inventions compensation in the amount of $ 4 million.
Additional buttons on the back of the Steam Controller, which SCUF Gaming considered to be a copy of their design, patented back in 2021, was the subject of legal dispute. Valve was alerted in 2021 that the Steam Controller contains an element patented by SCUF Gaming. Then the controller existed only as a prototype. Eventually Valve released the Steam Controller and sold 1.6 million units. In 2021, the company ceased its production and release. At the end of 2021, Corsair bought SCUF Gaming with all its patents.
SCUF Gaming lawyers appeared in court claiming that Valve ignored all complaints and warnings from SCUF about patent infringement, continued development of the Steam Controller and thereby infringed its intellectual property rights.
Last Tuesday, SCUF owner Corsair announced that it had won several years of legal action against Valve. The court sided with SCUF Gaming and ordered Valve to pay $ 4 million, although the patent owners asked for $ 6 to $ 11 million. Jury Unanimously Supports SCUF Gaming on All Voiced Claims. At the same time, it is noted that the jury called the violation of Valve willful, which will allow the judge to potentially increase the damage that Valve must compensate if he considers the crime “egregious”.
According to the SCUF Gaming website, it owns 105 patents. Most of them are associated with a special trigger mechanism for game controllers.
