The Spot robot dog can now be controlled remotely and has learned to charge on its own
Boston Dynamics’ Spot Dog Robot is much more self-sufficient. Very soon, the company will introduce a new version of the Spot Enterprise robot and browser-based Scout controls with an optimized interface for controlling Spot over the Internet. Finally, the universal Spot Arm will be presented, the capabilities of which we have already seen in the video.
The presentation of the new features of the Spot robot dog will be held on the YouTube channel at 19:00 Moscow time. But the journalists have already revealed all the details. The new features follow Boston Dynamics’ announcement last June that the Spot Explorer robot will be available to any company that can afford the $ 74,500 price tag. The added features were among the most requested by early Spot buyers (there are over 400 Spot customers in the world today).
“Customers in many industries have areas of critical equipment that are almost unmanned, although sometimes it takes hours to send someone out to check or do something relatively simple,” said Zack Jackowski, chief engineer at Spot. – Our clients would like to install robots at such facilities forever. As a result, a person who will monitor an alarm or a scheduled check can simply start the robot so that it gets up, looks around and makes simple manipulations. “.
The Scout app is Boston Dynamics’ effort to simplify remote control. At the moment, it turns Spot into an expensive TV camera. The company noted that the new hand is not yet working with remote control software, which makes the Spot only suitable for viewing and photographing the environment, and not for physically interacting with it. But the plans are to integrate manipulator support into Scout so that the robot can operate valves, pull levers, turn handles, open doors at the command of an operator hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away.
Scout works with both the existing Spot Explorer robot and the new Spot Enterprise. The latter has received a number of upgrades over the previous model, including a more powerful processor designed to handle more advanced autonomous algorithms in the future and an automatic charging feature. The modern Spot Explorer can work autonomously for about 90 minutes, and the new Spot Enterprise at a remote site with a charging station can function “indefinitely”. Hopefully, with Charging and Scout, companies will be able to use Spot as an alternative to sending staff to remote sites.
Spot locates its charging station using a QR code-style marker – Spot camera spots can be identified and used for improved navigation. As soon as the robot approaches the charging station, it can automatically move closer to the charging connectors on the cradle. The charging dock also includes a wired internet connection, making it faster and more reliable to download data collected by Spot sensors while out and about.
Scout can work over a slow internet connection because the robot is designed to be deployed in remote locations like offshore oil platforms or underground mines. Only 2 Mbps of bandwidth is enough to control the robot (Netflix currently recommends 3 Mbps for SD streaming). This is achieved by performing most of the functions autonomously. The system uses a Boston Dynamics server installed on the local network to process and compress data before sending it over the Internet.
And before it was possible to control Spot via the Internet using third-party software. But Scout is the company’s first optimized browser software. The Verge journalist tried to control the Spot Enterprise robot through such a system from a distance of 5000 km. The interaction was quite slow, but still the robot was quite controllable using the familiar WASD layout (controllers are also supported). Or you can simply indicate the points to which the robot goes by itself with the cursor. Controls like a low-res video game over a slow streaming service. There are noticeable delays between button press and response, but with the Spot’s built-in obstacle avoidance technology, everything worked well, including when climbing stairs. You can completely transfer control to the robot in cases when it patrols the same route every time. The operator can program this in advance, including automatic charging between walks.
The Spot Arm, which attaches to the robot’s head, can perform various manipulations. It is functionally similar to what Boston Dynamics demonstrated in previous videos, but the manipulator is more reliable and is now ready for use in the real world. Capturing a robotic arm is equipped with a camera and various sensors for orientation in space and performing actions in an autonomous mode. The manipulator supports existing Spot controls and is preprogrammed to perform specific actions such as opening doors or turning valves. Also, the developers will provide users with an API for self-programming hands.
Spot Enterprise will be more expensive than the existing Spot with its price of $ 74,500. At the same time, the robotic arm will be available to owners of existing Spot robots if they are ready to send their devices to Boston Dynamics for professional installation.
