Wikipedia is 20 years old: 52 million pages, more than 300 languages and the ninth place in the ranking of the most visited sites

The world’s largest free encyclopedia “Wikipedia” celebrates its 20th anniversary. During its existence, it has become the main open source of information on the Web, which is presented in more than 300 languages.

The big issue

Wikipedia was founded on January 15, 2021 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. Its operation is supported by the non-profit foundation Wikimedia, which accepts donations from everyone. Over the 20 years of its existence, users and administrators have added more than 52 million pages and 6.2 million articles in 317 languages. About 89% of all materials are not written in English. The share of the Russian-language part is 6.4 million pages and 1.6 million articles.

According to Wikipedia, every second the site is visited by eight thousand people, and every minute 350 edits are made to articles. The site ranks 13th in the world Alexa ranking from Amazon. The encyclopedia gains over 15 billion monthly visits.

“Wikipedia has gone from a seemingly impossible idea to a vast testimony of humanity. A place has appeared where we can share and learn about everything. This is made possible by a global effort of volunteers who extol knowledge and collaboration over conflict and self-interest. We strive to preserve the integrity of information when the world needs it most, ”said Katherine Maher, CEO of Wikimedia.

In honor of the celebration of the 20th anniversary, the resource has planned “something special”. The encyclopedia will release a special video dedicated to the community, and then hold a public event with the participation of “some people” who will talk about the site and the work being done.

Earlier, Wikipedia named the most popular articles in Russian for 2021. The top three included “Pandemic COVID-19”, “Coronaviruses” and YouTube. A complete list can be found on the encyclopedia page.
