Discovery: NPC faces in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild were made from Mii

The creators of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild used old Nintendo technology – Mii Maker to achieve such colorful NPCs. Fans have long joked that this is how the company generated heroes in Zelda, and this turned out to be true. This was found out and told by a Twitter user.

According to self-proclaimed “Mii expert” @HEYimHeroic, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild uses an advanced version of the Mii format. This means that with some modifications, gamers can bring their Mii into the game and transform them as Hyrule characters.

On Reddit, the user added that the game code refers to a more advanced version of the Mii called UMii. The characters of the latter have the same parameters as the Mii on the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS, but have minor differences in other ways. For example, they no longer support moles.

However, UMii in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild also does not support all Mii hairstyles. If you try to download them, the game will ask for a separate file, which ultimately converts the unsupported hairstyle to the type of hair that is supported. As a result, the character looks almost like the one you wanted to download.

@HEYimHeroic also clarified that Link, Zelda and other important characters were not created through UMii.
