Intel finished the past year with record revenue and is not going to sacrifice its own production
22.01.2021 [07:39],
Alexey Razin

A few days ago, knowledgeable sources reported that Intel management, in light of the upcoming change of CEO, decided not to rush to announce the product outsourcing plans that the public was waiting for from Robert Swan this week. His successor, Patrick Gelsinger, made it clear that Intel expects to reclaim its technology leadership.

The corresponding statement was made in the comments of the future head of Intel to the company’s quarterly report. According to Gelsinger, last week he had the opportunity to get acquainted with the state of affairs with the development of 7-nm technology, he was pleased with the progress made. This partly allowed the new head of Intel to declare that the company will produce most of the current products in 2023 in-house, although the use of contractor services will be expanded in certain areas.

“We’re not only interested in closing the gap,” Gelsinger explained, “we’re interested in regaining our position as the undisputed technological leader.”.

If we talk directly about the results of the fourth quarter, then Intel’s revenue by $ 2.6 billion exceeded market expectations, reaching $ 20 billion. This is one percent less than in the same period last year, but 2021 for the company was still the fifth consecutive period of revenue growth. Compared to 2021, Intel’s revenue grew from $ 72 to $ 77.9 billion, reaching a record high.

As expected, in the server direction, Intel revenue in the fourth quarter decreased by 16% to $ 6.1 billion. In quantitative terms, the supply of components decreased by 9% compared to the same period last year, and the average selling price immediately dropped by 12%. For the full year, however, the number of shipped server components was increased by 11% to a record value, as the spring boom associated with the pandemic affected. And yet, the average selling price of Intel server products for the whole year decreased by 3%. Server-side operating profit declined 40% in Q4, while operating margin dropped from 48% to 34%.

If we consider the dynamics of revenue in the server direction by individual segments, then in the fourth quarter it decreased by 15% due to a decrease in demand from cloud clients, by 25% due to a decrease in the activity of corporate and government buyers, by 3% due to providers communication services. But in annual terms, it was the cloud direction that showed a 20% increase in revenue, the commercial sector only lagged slightly with 17% growth.

It should be admitted that such a weakness in the server segment ultimately canceled out Intel’s achievements in previous years in reducing the company’s dependence on the PC market. In the fourth quarter, revenue from the direction of customer products grew by 9% to $ 10.9 billion, and for the whole of 2021 it increased by 8% to $ 40.1 billion. Operating profit for the quarter in this area increased by 10% to $ 4.5 billion, the profit margin remained at 41%. As you’d expect, Intel’s customer segment revenue was pushed up by laptops – core components brought in 30% more revenue in the fourth quarter than a year earlier. In the desktop segment, Intel revenue for the quarter decreased by 6%. In annual comparison, it decreased by 10%, but in the segment of laptops it grew by 20%. In physical terms, the volume of deliveries of Intel components for the PC segment increased in the fourth quarter by 33%, in just a year – by 15%.

The most interesting thing is that even a noticeable decrease in the average selling price did not prevent the steady growth of revenue in the notebook business – in the fourth quarter it amounted to 15%, for the whole year it reached 6%. But in the desktop segment, the dynamics of the average selling price indicates an increase in the share of more expensive processors in the sales structure. The average price for the quarter increased by one percent, and by the end of the year by two percent.

Intel traditionally combines the Internet of Things segment in financial reporting with the indicators of the Mobileye division, which develops components for automatic transport control systems. Intel’s Israeli subsidiary grows 39% to record $ 333 million. In annual terms, it increased by 10%, also updating the record. The entire segment of the Internet of Things has reduced quarterly revenue by 16% to $ 777 million, and operating profit in general fell by 49% to $ 123 million due to the pandemic.

Solid State Memory Manufacturing Brought Intel $ 1.2 Billion In Q4, Just One Percent Less From A Year Previous. Increased prices for solid-state memory chips end the quarter with operating income of $ 76 million. Programmable Matrix Business Cuts Quarterly Revenue 16% To $ 505 Million As Customers Start Switching To 5G Network Solutions. Operating profit decreased by 49% to $ 43 million.

Among the achievements of the past period important for investors, Intel highlighted the start of shipments of 10nm Ice Lake-SP server processors, 14nm Rocket Lake-S desktop processors, which will not reach consumers before the end of March, according to motherboard manufacturers. Sapphire Rapids 10nm server processors and Alder Lake 10nm desktop processors are already shipping as engineering samples, which are slated to be announced in the second half of the year. The company also recalled that it has doubled the number of 14nm and 10nm products produced since 20021. If we talk separately about 10nm products, then its number has quadrupled over the year.

Intel expects revenue growth of several percent in the PC segment from the current quarter, and a 25% decrease in revenue in the server and related segments compared to the same period last year. Excluded from this forecast is the solid-state memory business, with revenue expected to shrink by 6%. Intel’s operating margin will continue to decline, dropping eight percentage points to 30% in the first quarter of this year. The overall rate of return will be reduced by four percentage points to 58%. The company’s revenue in the first quarter should be $ 18.6 billion, Intel has not yet published a forecast for the entire 2021.
