China kicks off its new space year with successful communications satellite launch
21.01.2021 [23:14],
Konstantin Khodakovsky

China launches Tiantong 1-03 communications satellite, marking the start of a very busy space year for China. Rocket CZ-3B (“Changzheng-3B” or Long March 3B) launched at 19:25 Moscow time on Tuesday January 19 from the Xichang cosmodrome in the Chinese province of Sichuan.

Less than an hour later, the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) – China’s main space contractor – has confirmed that the satellite has been successfully launched into a geostationary transfer orbit. In the coming weeks, the satellite will reach a predetermined position in geostationary orbit. At an altitude of 35,786 kilometers, it will orbit at a speed that will keep it at a given point above the Earth – a geostationary orbit allows this and is therefore very useful for providing stable communication services.

As can be seen from the numbering, Tiantong 1-03 is the third satellite in the Tiantong 1 series. These devices weighing 5.2 tons each, together with a land-based mobile communication system, are designed to form a single network that will provide mobile services in China, adjacent countries, the Middle East and Africa, as well as in most of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It is designed to transmit stable voice and digital information to aircraft, cars and maritime transport in any weather. All three satellites are operated by China SatCom, which specializes in satellite and telecommunications services.

This launch is the first of more than 40 that CASC has planned for the current year. Commercial Chinese companies including Expace, Landspace, iSpace and Galactic Energy are also expected to conduct a number of their own missions in 2021. Xichang is one of the busiest spaceports in the world, despite being located in a remote part of southwestern China. 21 launches will be carried out from it this year.
